Maxamed Xaashi Dhamac 'Gaarriye': Biography and Poems. Ponte Invisibile (redsea-online), Pisa, 2012, 128 pages - ISBN: 9788888934334

Maxamed Xaashi Dhamac "Gaarriye", one of the most famous living Somali-speaking poets, was born, bred and brought up in Hargeysa, Somaliland. In the early 1970s, he was among many of his contemporaries living in Mogadishu whose works were regarded to have impact upon the prevalent socio-political situation in the country. They were mainly motivated and moved by their patriotic sentiments and leftist political bearing which was internationally popular in that era. Gaarriye was the initiator of the famous poetic combat chain better known as “Deelley” and the author of “Hagarlaawe”, his collected poems, enough to establish his eminence as great poet among Somali speakers.

A distinguished poet, playwright, actor, broadcaster, educator and a great innovator, Xasan Shiikh Muumin was borne on 25 December 1931 in the historic costal town of Saylac. He was the only son of a middle class family in the Somali standards of the time. His father, Shiikh Muumin, was a small trader and highly respected man of religion. At the age of nine, Xasan moved with his family to the inland small town of Borame where he grew up and received his Koranic and elementary education in the 1940s. Thus, in his sedentary background, Xasan was rather unique among noted Somali playwrights of his generation, most of whom were from rural (mainly pastoral) backgrounds. Nonetheless, Xasan was not any less versed with Somali traditional culture than any of his fellow dramatists from pastoral origins, as could be observed from his work most of which is deeply rooted in Somali oral tradition.

In his professional life, Xasan took up several employments, the longest and most significant of which was his work for the state-owned national radio station, Radio Mogadishu (1968 – 1976). He worked there as a broadcaster, producer of cultural programmes and as a composer of poems, songs and radio dramas.

Frankfurt/Cape Town - Somali novelist Nuruddin Farah tops the list of African authors at the Frankfurt Book Fair, which features an Africa Day this year.

Farah, who has been described as the most important author to come out of the continent in the last 25 years and won the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 1998 for his work Secrets, is seen as a strong contender for the Nobel Literature Prize.

He is also often hailed as a feminist writer for his treatment of women characters in his English-language novels.

Writing is 'just my job,' the 61-year-old told Deutsche Presse- Agentur dpa. His latest work Knots - the second novel in his third-published trilogy - has just been published.

He is scheduled to participate in a panel discussion on the 'high art of African storytelling' at the book fair that has also drawn the participation of several African intellectuals, authors and rising literary names.

In conversation, the softly-spoken Farah displays a knack for a good story or anecdote, drawing from his spells living in various African countries and his frequent visits abroad.
